Elderly driver killed in fatal crash, granddaughter injured

KUALA MUDA: A 73-year-old woman died, and her granddaughter sustained injuries after their Perodua Kancil plunged into a ditch following a collision with a Mini Cooper in Bakar Arang today.

The deceased, identified as Lam Koi Lan, succumbed to severe head injuries at the crash site.

Kuala Muda police chief Assistant Commissioner Wan Azharuddin Wan Ismail reported that the Mini Cooper, driven by a 23-year-old man, was travelling from the Bakar Arang Industrial area towards the Alor Star-Butterworth-Kulim trunk road.

The Perodua Kancil, driven by the deceased and carrying her 19-year-old granddaughter, was entering the route from Bakar Arang through a junction.

"The Mini Cooper was proceeding straight when suddenly, the Perodua Kancil emerged from a left-hand junction, obstructing its path. The Mini Cooper, unable to avoid the collision, struck the right side of the Perodua Kancil.

"As a result, the Perodua Kancil lost control and veered into a roadside ditch on the opposite lane," he said in a statement.

He mentioned that the deceased suffered severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The body has been transported to Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital for a post-mortem examination," he added.

On the other hand, Wan Azharuddin said that the Mini Cooper driver did not sustain any injuries, while the deceased's granddaughter suffered hand injuries and received medical treatment at the hospital.

"The incident will be investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987," he concluded.
