Cop hurt while on hot pursuit of drug traffickers near border

PADANG BESAR: A policeman sustained injuries when his motorcycle crashed while pursuing two drug traffickers who tried to smuggle three kilogrammes of cannabis near the Malaysia-Thailand border in Chuping here on Sunday.

In the 8.30pm incident, the policeman and his colleague, attached to Battalion 1 of the Ulu Kinta General Operations Force's intelligence division, were patrolling a plantation area near the border.

Padang Besar police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Shokri Abdullah said the policemen saw two men on a motorcycle behaving suspiciously.

"The men sped off upon seeing the policemen approaching them and threw away a bag during the chase.

"While pursuing the suspects, one of the policemen who was riding a motorcycle lost control of his machine and crashed.

"He sustained injuries to his face, knee and elbow while the suspects managed to escape," he said in a statement today.

Shokri said upon inspecting the bag discarded by the suspect, police found three compressed green plants suspected to be cannabis weighing three kilogrammes.

He said the drugs worth RM9,300 were believed to be obtained from Thailand and could supply 3,000 addicts.
