IPOH: Two friends were sentenced to four years in prison by the Sessions Court here today for stealing kitchen utensils, last week.
Judge Hilmiah Yusof handed down the sentence to Faizal Muhamat Darus, 43, and Mohd Ismail Mohd Abdul Aziz, 41, after they pleaded guilty to the offence.
According to the charge sheet, the duo had broken into a house and stolen a wire, a pot, three spatulas, and two steel rods at Taman Rasa Sayang here between 10am and 10.30am on Aug 14.
They were charged under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft, which carries a maximum penalty of seven years' imprisonment, a fine, or both upon conviction.
Deputy public prosecutor Raya Amirah Nabihan Shahrir handled the prosecution, while the accused were not represented by lawyers.
Raya Amirah Nabihan requested a fair punishment for both accused as a lesson to them.
During mitigation, Faizal pleaded for a minimum sentence, saying that he did not have a fixed income and only earned RM20 daily while needing to support his wife and three children.
His friend, Mohd Ismail, who is still single, also pleaded for a minimum sentence, saying that he worked as a lawnmower and earned between RM20 and RM30 per day.
