[UPDATED] Traders near sinkhole urged to close over gas leak fears [WATCH]

KUALA LUMPUR: Traders in the area where the sinkhole emerged on Jalan Masjid India have been advised to temporarily close their businesses to mitigate risks from potential gas leaks in the manholes along the water flow path.

Dang Wangi police chief Assistant Commissioner Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman warned that these leaks could pose health risks to visitors.

"We advise that both traders and visitors temporarily cease activities to avoid any health hazards that might arise from gas escaping through the manholes," he said at a press conference today.

He added that yesterday, the City police chief and the mayor had confirmed that the area was safe to visit.

He said Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) was continuing its investigation into the ground structure to gather more detailed information and additional findings.

The sinkhole, which appeared yesterday, led to an incident where an Indian national in her 40s fell into the pit.

Rescuers could only recover a pair of slippers belonging to her after nearly 17 hours of searching.
