BATU PAHAT: A fisherman recently released from prison was charged in the magistrate's court here today for threatening to kill his mother and family.
Saiful Azri Jamaludin, 28, pleaded not guilty before magistrate Nurasidah A. Rahman.
According to the charge sheet, Saiful allegedly threatened to stab his mother and family at a house in Kampung Minyak Beku here at 9.45am on Dec 7.
The accused was charged under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation, which carries a maximum penalty of seven years' imprisonment, a fine, or both, upon conviction.
Deputy public prosecutor Farah Wahidah Mohd Sharip told the court that the incident occurred after the accused became angry when reprimanded by his family.
He was reportedly seen sharpening a parang, which alarmed his family, including his 19-year-old sibling, who lodged a report the same day.
Police investigations revealed the accused had five prior drug-related offences and had recently completed a two-year parole in Melaka.
He returned to his hometown on Dec 6, a day before the alleged threats were made. He tested positive for drugs in a urine test conducted after his arrest.
The accused was represented by lawyer Kamarulariffin Nordin from the National Legal Aid Foundation.
Magistrate Nurasidah set Jan 13 next year for document submission and legal counsel appointment. Bail was set at RM5,000 with one surety, but the accused failed to post bail and was remanded to Ledang Prison pending trial.
