MUAR: A 44-year-old man lost nearly RM550,000 to a scam after falling for a fake job offer selling health and electronic products he found on Facebook last month.
District police chief Assistant Commissioner Raiz Mukhliz Azman Aziz said the fraudsters lured the victim with promises of lucrative commissions of up to 30 per cent for each product sold online.
The scammers claimed there were ready buyers, but required the victim to pay upfront to qualify as an agent.
"Enticed by the offer, the victim registered on the website and between Aug 28 and Sept 15, transferred RM542,444.89 into eight different bank accounts provided by the scammers," said Raiz Mukhliz in a statement today.
When the victim attempted to withdraw his investment after the website indicated the products had been sold, he was asked to make additional payments, which he refused.
Realising he had been scammed, he lodged a police report.
The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
