Man duped of RM43,000 in fake job scam

SIBU: A man in his 30s was duped out of over RM43,000 by a scammer posing as an employer offering a commission-based job.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Zulkipli Suhaili said that the victim first connected with a woman named Lau via Facebook Messenger on Nov 27 regarding the purchase of an item.

"The suspect then offered the victim a commission-based job and provided a phone number to contact if he was interested," he said.

"The victim was instructed to click a YouTube link, like the content, and share it with others.

"Initially, he was paid RM190 for completing the task," he said.

However, he was later told he had made an error and could secure his commission by making additional payments, he added.

Zulkipli said, "The victim made seven transactions totalling RM43,351 to two different bank accounts on Dec 1 and 2, before realising he had been scammed."

The victim lodged a police report on Sunday, and the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
