Mum, 17, pleads guilty to giving false info to cops

TELUK INTAN: A teenage girl pleaded guilty at the Sessions Court here today to a charge of providing false information to police in relation to a theft case.

The young mother, aged 17 years and 11 months, made the plea as the charge was read before judge Norhamizah Shaiffudin.

According to the charge sheet, the food stall worker was accused of providing a false written statement to a police investigator with the intent of implicating her 27-year-old male colleague.

In the written statement, the accused claimed that the man took RM600 belonging to the complainant, which led the investigator to pursue an investigation against the alleged victim.

The offence was committed at the Office of the Investigating Officer at the Hilir Perak District Police Headquarters here on Sept 10.

The charge falls under Section 182 of the Penal Code, which provides for imprisonment of up to six months or a maximum fine of RM2,000, or both, if convicted.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Izzudin Fakri Hamdan offered bail of RM3,000 for the accused.

Faustina Francis, a lawyer from the National Legal Aid Foundation representing the accused, requested the court to impose a minimal bail on the grounds that the accused has to support her one-year-old daughter.

The court allowed the accused to be released on a bail of RM1,000 with one surety.

The court set Oct 28 as the next hearing date to allow the Social Welfare Department to present its character report and for sentencing.

After the proceedings, the accused was seen sobbing uncontrollably as she was escorted to the holding cell.
