KUALA LUMPUR: A fast-food restaurant worker pleaded guilty at the Sessions Court today to stealing a rented Honda Civic and attempting to murder the vehicle's co-owner in Putrajaya last week.
Muhammad Wan Azhar Azman, 20, was accused of stealing a car and recklessly driving the vehicle with knowledge that it could cause the death of Mohamed Jalil Iskandar, 28, who clung to the bonnet, but was flung off and severely injured.
He pled guilty after the charges of attempted murder and theft of the car, which belonged to Joshua Jeyaseelan David, 30, were read out to him before judge Azrul Darus.
He committed both offences between 3.40pm and 4pm at the traffic lights of Lebuh Perdana Timur in Presint 15, Putrajaya, on Oct 23.
Upon conviction, he faces a 20-year jail term for attempted murder and a maximum of seven years' jail and a fine for motor vehicle theft.
Clad in a blue sweater, Wan Azhar, who was unrepresented, pleaded for a lenient sentence.
"I admit to committing the offences. I ask for a lesser jail term given my young age," he said.
None of his family members were in court today and there was also nobody to bail him out.
He said he was from Perak and was living at the restaurant's hostel before his arrest.
Deputy public prosecutor Nor Aisyah Mohamed Zanyuin did not offer bail as the offences were non-bailable.
She told the court that Jalil was being treated at the hospital and his condition was unknown.
Azrul denied bail for Wan Azhar and ordered for a social report to be obtained from the Welfare Department before sentencing on Dec 2.
