45 undocumented migrants detained for overstaying and illegal work

JOHOR BARU: The Johor Immigration Department detained 45 foreigners for overstaying and working without permits during a raid in Taman Daya yesterday.

Johor Immigration Department director Datuk Mohd Rusdi Mohd Darus said the operation followed public tip-offs about the increasing number of foreigners working and living in Taman Daya without valid documentation.

During the raid, enforcement officers inspected 106 individuals.

Those detained included 22 Bangladeshi men, 15 men and a woman from Myanmar, an Indian man, a Vietnamese woman, and an Indonesian woman, all aged between 19 and 44.

They were unable to produce valid passports and had either overstayed or worked illegally.

Among those arrested was a Myanmar national who managed an unlicensed restaurant and employed undocumented migrants.

In a separate operation in Muar on Monday (Sept 23), seven foreigners were arrested in a joint effort involving the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry, police, the municipal council, and the manpower department.

Rusdi said seven premises were raided and 102 individuals inspected, leading to the detention of six Bangladeshi men and a Myanmar national, aged between 20 and 48, for working without valid permits and overstaying.

He said that similar operations would continue to target migrants violating immigration regulations.
