44 illegal migrant construction workers detained in Batu Pahat

BATU PAHAT: The State Immigration Department today detained 44 undocumented foreign workers during a raid at a construction site here.

The operation against illegal migrants codenamed Ops Kutip, saw the enforcement officers inspecting 88 individuals' documents and permits permitting them to work and remain in the country legally.

State Immigration Department director Datuk Mohd Rusdi Mohd Darus said 33 Bangladeshi men, eight Indonesian men, two Myanmar men, and a Nepalese man aged between 19 and 51, were detained after they failed to produce legal documents.

The detainees were being held at the Pekan Nenas Immigration Depot for further investigation and action.

The operations, he said, were part of enforcement actions following public complaints and information received on the foreigners' presence.

"We will intensify enforcement efforts in the state against foreigners residing illegally, or those who have overstayed or misused their social passes.

"Strict action will also be taken against anyone employing and harbouring illegal immigrants," he added.
