KUALA LUMPUR: Police have launched an investigation into a case involving eight barrels of suspected chemical waste that were dumped in a drain at Kampung Desa Aman, Sungai Buloh, earlier this week.
Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan confirmed that efforts are underway to identify the culprits.
"Yes, we have opened investigations and are taking the necessary steps to find those responsible. Samples of the chemicals have been sent to the Chemistry Department for analysis," he said.
An investigation paper has been opened under Section 430 of the Penal Code for knowingly causing damage to public water supplies or air quality.
Selangor Environment Department director Nor Aziah Jaafar said that the eight barrels have been removed from the site and taken to a safe disposal location in Bukit Tagar.
Our investigations suggest that the chemical waste is an ammonia solution," she added.
It was reported that eight barrels containing liquid believed to be chemical waste were found dumped in a drain at Kampung Desa Aman, Sungai Buloh near here on Sept 24.
A team of Fire and Rescue Department personnel from the Sungai Buloh Fire and Rescue station was deployed to the scene after they were alerted to the discovery of the barrels at around 9pm.
Apart from the Fire and Rescue Department and DoE, other agencies involved in the operation included the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA), the Land Office, the National Water Services Commission (Span), and the police.
