Food seller claims trial to cheating friend of RM66,000

KUALA LUMPUR: A wanton noodles seller today claimed trial at the magistrate's court to a charge of cheating a friend out of RM66,000 in a fraudulent investment scheme two years ago.

Leong Lai Peng,44, entered her plea after the charge was read out to her before magistrate Illi Marisqa Khalizan.

The charge sheet read that she had dishonestly convinced her 38-year-old friend into investing in a non-existent scheme.

Leong allegedly committed the offence between July 2,2022 and June 9 last year at a restaurant in Kepong Baru.

The offence under Section 420 of the Penal Code carries a jail term not less than one year and a maximum of 10 years with whipping and a fine upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Syafika Azwa Fikri asked the court to set bail at RM20,000 with one surety and to fix a date for document submission.

In mitigation, defence lawyer V. Annamalai pleaded for a lower bail for his client, who was charged for the first time.

"She sells wanton noodles at a food court and her husband assists her at the stall. The RM20,000 suggested bail is too high to ensure her attendance in court.

"I ask for a nominal sum to be imposed on her," he said.

The court allowed a RM6,000 bail with one surety and set Nov 6 for document submission.
