Barber charged with cheating woman of RM358k over fake stewardess job [WATCH]

GEORGE TOWN: A barber was charged in the magistrate's court here today with cheating a woman out of RM358,015 by promising her a job as a stewardess with Singapore Airlines.

Tan Chun Hooi, 37, claimed trial when the charge was read to him by the court interpreter before magistrate Siti Nurul Suhaila Baharin.

Tan is alleged to have deceived Thian Pau Chen, 38, into believing that she could get her a job as a stewardess with Singapore Airlines.

This had led her to hand over RM358,015 to him through his bank account.

Tan allegedly committed the offence at Lebu Rambai 7, Paya Terubong, here between 10.15pm on July 3 and 6.39pm on Dec 15, last year.

He was charged under Section 420 of the Penal Code which carries a minimum one year and maximum 10 years' imprisonment and a fine upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Nurul Atikah Ashraf Ali urged the court to set bail at RM15,000 with one surety.

Tan, through his counsel Yiew De Xien, told the court that he earned RM3,000 a month.

"My client is also supporting his grandmother.

"As such, we urged for a minimal bail," he said.

Siti Nurul Suhaila set bail at RM5,000 and fixed Sept 12 for submission of documents.
