Netizens slam Malaysian-registered MPV driver for illegal parking in Thailand

KUALA LUMPUR: The owner of a Malaysian-registered luxury vehicle has drawn criticism from netizens after a video of it being clamped by Thai authorities for illegal parking has gone viral.

The vehicle is believed to have blocked an intersection in the southern Thai border town of Hatyai.

A 24-second video of the incident was shared on TikTok by @diangsiam, and has garnered over 350,000 views and more than 11,000 likes.

Recorded from inside another vehicle, the footage shows the multi-purpose vehicle parked in front of a traffic light, obstructing a lane meant for left-turning vehicles.

A Thai police officer is seen clamping the front right tyre of the vehicle.

The caption, written in Thai, reads, "Dear Malaysians, my country has laws".

Malaysians flooded the comments section, condemning the driver for disrespecting local traffic rules and tarnishing Malaysia's image abroad.

Others advised travellers to respect Thailand's regulations.

"Other people come to visit, they also want to enter Thailand, but then don't even know anything (about local laws)," user @_younme_ commented.

"You have to learn the traffic laws in Thailand — where you can park and where you can't. It's the same as in Jakarta, especially in the city," says user @leezamsi_70.
