Man arrested for brandishing knife at cop on Samarahan-Kuching Expressway

KOTA SAMARAHAN: A man was arrested after brandishing a knife at a policeman, who attempted to assist him following an accident near a shopping centre on the Samarahan-Kuching Expressway.

District police chief Deputy Superintendent Jaimi Husin said the incident occurred at 11.35am yesterday when an officer from the mobile patrol vehicle unit was despatched to the scene after receiving information that a Perodua Myvi had skidded off the road.

"As the officer attempted to help and remove the driver from his vehicle, the suspect suddenly brandished a knife at him.

"Attempts were made to calm him, but he refused to cooperate."

Jaimi said the suspect had been travelling from Kuching to Kota Samarahan when his car collided with four other vehicles, causing him to lose control and swerve into a ditch.

He said the 24-year-old suspect was apprehended with the assistance of firefighters, who were also at the scene.

He added that a vegetable knife used by the suspect was confiscated.

The suspect will be remanded tomorrow under Sections 427 and 506 of the Penal Code, and Section 6(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958.
