BUTTERWORTH: A man has been detained for brandishing a knife at his ex-girlfriend at a hypermarket here on Sunday.
The incident at a hypermarket in Bagan Ajam about 8.45pm was in full view of shoppers.
Footage of the incident has since gone viral.
Seberang Prai Utara district police chief Assistant Commissioner Anuar Abd Rahman said police were alerted to the incident by a woman, who claimed to have been disturbed by her ex-boyfriend.
He said the victim was attacked by the suspect using a knife, causing injuries to her right pinkie during the altercation.
"Members of the public managed to apprehend the suspect.
"The suspect was arrested by police who arrived at the scene shortly after," he said.
Anuar said the suspect has been remanded under Section 117 of the Penal Code for further investigation.
The case is probed under Section 324 and 506 of the Penal Code.
"Once we have received instruction from the prosecutor, we will charge the suspect," he added.
In the 1.18 minute video, a man could be seen holding a knife at a woman.
Several people were seen talking to the man.
There were also blood stains on the floor.
The man was subsequently arrested.
