GOF cracks coconut smuggling attempt, 41 tonnes confiscated

TUMPAT: The General Operations Force detained a man and seized 41,000 kg coconuts worth RM205,000 here last night.

Also seized in the operation was a trailer which was used to transport the coconuts.

GOF Southeast Brigade commander Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Ab Hamid said the trailer was passing a roadblock at Neting when it was stopped by GOF personnel.

"The GOF personnel stopped the vehicle for inspection when it passed the area about 10.15pm.

"After checking, they found 41,000 kg coconuts without any valid documentation and later detained the driver," he said in a statement today (Oct 13).

He added initial investigation revealed that the coconuts was to be smuggled to Thailand via the many illegal jetties in Pengkalan Kubor.

"The man is believed to be hired by an individual to send the coconuts across the border.

"The 33-year-old man is being held for further action," he added.

I another development, he said GOF personnel has seized two cars laden with petrol worth more than RM1,500 yesterday (Oct 12).

However, no one was arrested in the operation at Tualang illegal jetty, Tumpat about 1.30pm.

"The two cars were abandoned near the illegal jetty. We suspect the fuel was to be smuggled to Thailand," he added.
