Vietnamese woman claims trial to prostitution and overstaying

MUAR: A Vietnamese woman, employed as a teacher, pleaded not guilty in the magistrate's court here to charges of engaging in prostitution and overstaying today.

The accused, Doan Thi Mong Trinh, 29, claimed trial after the charges were read by a court interpreter before magistrate Fatin Dalillah Khalid.

According to the first charge, she was accused of soliciting clients for prostitution at a shophouse on Jalan Indah, Taman Indah, at 3.15pm on Oct 1.

She was charged under Section 372B of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum one-year imprisonment, a fine, or both, if convicted.

Doan was also accused of overstaying as her social visit pass had expired on Aug 9.

The offence was committed at the same time and location.

She was charged under Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, punishable under Section 15(4) of the same act, which stipulates a maximum sentence of five years in prison, a fine of up to RM10,000, or both, upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Mohammad Arif Marzuki prosecuted while the accused was not represented.

The court set Nov 25 for mention. Bail was set at RM12,000 for both charges.
