Gerik's 'killer tiger' to be sent to wildlife rescue centre

JELI: A tiger, which was believed to have attacked two people in Gerik and Batu Melintang, will be sent to the National Wildlife Rescue Centre (NWRC) in Sungkai, Perak following its capture today.

State Wildlife Department director Mohamad Hafid Rohani said the male tiger would be sent to the NWRC as soon as possible.

He added the tiger, between eight to 10-years-old, was captured via one of two traps set up by the department in the area.

He said the department on Oct 17 mounted an operation to track down the tiger after it attacked a Myanmar man at Ladang Cili Thek Him Vegetables Resources here.

"The following day, with the help of Perak wildlife rangers, we set up two traps to capture the tiger.

"This morning, the tiger entered one of the traps set up in Hentian Damai, here," he said in a statement.

Hafid said the attack on the Myanmar national was the first tiger attack recorded this year.

"We are still investigating to determine whether the captured tiger was the same one that mauled the man in Gerik, Perak," he added.

He said the department had recorded six cases of tiger attacks in Kelantan since 2021, with four people killed and another victim seriously injured.

He said they have so far captured three tigers since 2021.

On Oct 17, a Myanmar man was mauled to death by a tiger at a workers' quarters in Batu 18 on the Jeli-Gerik East-West highway.

The Myanmar man had gone missing the night before and his body was found the following morning.

The incident occurred barely three days after another man was attacked by a tiger in Gerik, Perak.

The location of the Gerik tiger attack was approximately three kilometres away from the latest incident.
