Royal assault: Case not closed, say Pahang police

KUANTAN: Police are waiting for new developments after submitting an investigation paper (IP) over the alleged assault of a construction worker by a group of men, which purportedly included a member of royalty, in June this year.

Pahang police chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman said the IP was submitted to the deputy public prosecutor's (DPP) office last month.

"The case is not closed. The papers are being looked through by the DPP.

"We will wait for any new progress or outcomes," he said, promising no cover-ups on the matter.

Yesterday, a 44-year-old man, who claimed he was assaulted at a stable here by 20 people including a member of royalty, claimed that no action was being taken regarding his case.

Yahaya, in response, said the victim should contact the investigating officer handling his case to get a progress report.

"He can go to the Kuantan police station or contact the investigating officer to get the case updates. Do not make accusations against the department," he said.

Today, Tengku Mahkota of Pahang, Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, took to social media to demand justice for the victim and called for transparency in the investigation.

On Sept 5, Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah said no one was above the law, not even royalty, and urged police to conduct a detailed probe immediately.

The following day, Yahaya vowed a transparent probe into the alleged assault, saying there would be no cover-ups or delays in the investigation.
