Police obtain two-day remand order against university student for fraudulent fundraising [WATCH]

JITRA: Police have obtained a two-day remand order against a 23-year-old public university student who allegedly deceived an organisation into raising donations intended for his tuition fees.

The remand order was issued by magistrate Nurul Huda Idris under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating at the Jitra magistrate's court today.

Escorted by police, the student arrived at the court complex at 8.28am, clad in an orange lock-up attire with his hands cuffed.

He appeared calm as he passed a group of media representatives before entering the courtroom.

Yesterday, Kubang Pasu police chief Superintendent Rodzi Abu Hassan confirmed that police arrested the university student at his home at 4pm.

This followed a police report filed by Cancer Survivors Malaysia chairman Zurani Kamal at the Kubang Pasu district police headquarters.

She alleged that the student had misled CSM and others by claiming his family was experiencing financial difficulties and needed assistance with his tuition fees.

Identifying himself as Lim, the student contacted Zuraini last Sunday, requesting help to raise RM5,000 to avoid expulsion from a public university.

Moved by his story, she shared his plight on her Facebook page, including his bank account details.

Within hours, she raised RM1,176, only to later discover from an NGO in Penang that he had collected over RM30,000 but used the funds for online gambling instead.
