KUCHING: A man in his 40s was injured after being shot by an unknown assailant while waiting outside a school in Sibu early today.
The incident occurred at 2.30pm on Jalan Wong King Hou, where the victim was sitting in his four-wheel-drive vehicle, waiting for his child.
Sibu district police chief, Assistant Commissioner Zulkipli Suhaili, saide that the assailant, believed to have emerged from nearby foliage, suddenly opened fire with what is suspected to be a pistol.
"As a result of the gunfire, the victim sustained injuries to the right side of his back," he said.
"After firing the shots, the suspect fled the scene immediately."
Despite his injuries, Zulkipli said that the victim was able to exit his vehicle and seek help from bystanders.
"He collapsed by the roadside and was rushed to Sibu Hospital," he said.
Police are actively investigating the incident and are in pursuit of the suspect.
