Businessman arrested for submitting false school repair claims

KOTA KINABALU: A businessman was arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) late last night (Oct 24) on suspicion of submitting a false claim related to the supply of raw materials for school maintenance and repairs, valued at RM45,000.

The suspect, a man in his 40s, allegedly submitted a claim containing false information to a district education office in the state.

According to sources, the business owner was detained about 12.30am when he arrived to provide a statement at the state MACC office.

Following the arrest, the suspect was brought to the magistrate's court here this morning, where magistrate Portia Tham Ong Leng issued a seven-day remand order against him until Nov 1.

"The suspect is believed to have made the claim this year, submitting two invoices of approximately RM25,000 and RM20,000 for the supply of raw materials intended for school repairs and maintenance, which were never delivered," the source said.

State MACC director Datuk S. Karunanithy confirmed the arrest and stated that the case was being investigated under Section 18 of the MACC Act 2009.

He also indicated that additional arrests were expected.
