Sabah MACC detains 2 Education officers over bribery in school contracts

KOTA KINABALU: Two senior officers from the state district Education offices were detained by the Sabah Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission yesterday.

The male and female suspects, both in their 40s, were held for allegedly receiving bribes related to the appointment of suppliers for raw materials for school repairs and maintenance in Kudat, valued at RM600,000.

Sources said the suspects were arrested about 3pm, when giving their statements at the Sabah MACC office.

The suspects were taken to the Kota Kinabalu Court this morning, where a four-day remand order was issued.

"The suspects are believed to have received bribes from 2023 to 2024 through money deposited into a bank account belonging to their proxy."

The arrests followed the detention of a business owner yesterday for allegedly submitting two false claims worth about RM45,000.

Meanwhile, Sabah MACC director Datuk S. Karunanithy said that the case was being investigated under the MACC Act 2009 for providing false details.

Previously, Kudat member of parliament Datuk Verdon Bahanda had revealed issues related to a cartel involved in misappropriating school funds concerning the state district Education offices during the 2025 Budget debate in Parliament.

He had urged MACC to conduct an investigation.
