Foul stench leads to discovery of decomposing body

TANAH MERAH: A foul odour from a house in Taman Selasih here led to the discovery of a man's body.

The deceased, a 53-year-old, was found dead in an upstairs bedroom at 11.50pm last night by the authorities.

District police chief Superintendent Mohd Haki Hasbullah said the man is believed to have died five days ago, with his body already decomposing and infested with maggots.

"Our officers received a call from the man's neighbour, who reported a foul smell coming from the house.

"The deceased lived with his father, who is in his 90s and suffers from dementia, so the police had to break down the door to carry out an inspection.

"The body was found in an upstairs bedroom, already decomposing and infested with maggots," he said in a statement today.

Mohd Haki said further investigations revealed no evidence of foul play. The body was taken to the Tanah Merah Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

He said the case was classified as a sudden death and he urged anyone with relevant information to come forward to assist in the investigation.
