KUALA LUMPUR: Police have identified the man recorded insulting Islam in a viral video.
City police chief Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa said that the 64-second video, uploaded by a Facebook user named Tan Chong Ren@Tan Speaker Corner, has ignited outrage among netizens.
"In the video, the man, seated in a vehicle, can be heard making derogatory remarks against Islam," he said.
Rusdi confirmed that police had identified the suspect and are preparing to record his statement.
"The process has been slightly delayed as the suspect is currently undergoing mental health treatment at a hospital," he said in a statement today.
He also urged the public to refrain from sharing the video to avoid unnecessary unrest or disturbances to public order.
"We take this matter seriously and will take stern action against anyone who attempts to disrupt public peace and national security," said Rusdi.
Police have opened an investigation under Section 298A of the Penal Code, Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, and Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955.
