MIRI: A 32-year-old man was arrested yesterday to assist in police investigations following the discovery of two objects suspected to be explosive devices inside a mosque in Senadin, reports said.
Miri police chief Assistant Commissioner Alexson Naga Chabu, in a statement published by The Borneo Post today, said the police received a report about the discovery of the two objects at the mosque at around 1pm yesterday.
Acting on the report, he said a Bomb Disposal Unit from the Miri police headquarters was deployed to the scene.
"The team dispatched to the scene confirmed that these packages were not explosive items," he said.
He added that the suspect, who works as a grass cutter, was arrested to assist in the investigation.
He is being investigated under Section 298 and Section 506 of the Penal Code for insulting a religion and criminal intimidation, respectively.
He also advised the public to refrain from making any speculations about the case, as it could lead to public unrest.
He called on anyone with information about criminal activities to contact the nearest police station or call 085-433769.
