Family of couple killed by drunk driver to take legal action

PASIR GUDANG: The family of a husband and wife who were killed after being hit by a drunk driver at a traffic light intersection here on Saturday will take legal action against the driver.

Ramlah Kasiran, 56, said this is not only to teach the driver a lesson but also to seek justice for her five orphaned grandchildren after losing their parents, Mohd Ridzwan Mohd Rudi, 37, and Linda Mohd A Aziz, 35.

She said that the family, especially her grandchildren, are traumatised by the tragic loss of their parents due to someone else's wrongdoing.

"I accept Allah's will, but legal action must be taken against the perpetrator. Many cases involving drunk drivers end with mere fines, which are not proportional to the suffering endured by the families, especially children left orphaned, like my grandchildren.

"Tomorrow, Insha Allah (God willing), we will appoint a lawyer to handle this case," she said when met at her home at Flat Taman Cendana here today.

Ramlah added that if they win the case, the compensation could be used to support her five grandchildren in the future.

"My late son and daughter-in-law left behind five children, and they still have a long life ahead. I pray that Allah grants my husband and me a long life to care for them.

"I am unemployed, and only my husband works as a supermarket forklift driver.

"Alhamdulillah, since yesterday, many people have come to visit us, including those offering donations. Only Allah can repay their kindness," she said.

She also added that the Johor Islamic Religious Council (MAINJ) and the Social Welfare Department visited them and provided application forms for assistance for her grandchildren.

The early-morning accident left the couple's five children—Nur Aleesha Aindah Abdullah, 17 (a person with disabilities), Muhammad Ikmal Danish, 15, Nur Shahkira Mohd Ridzwan, 14, Nur Shahmira Mohd Ridzwan, 12, and Nur Aisyah Humairah Mohd Ridzwan, 3—orphans.
