SHAH ALAM: A man and his Indonesian mistress are believed to have been operating an international drug smuggling racket involving millions of ringgit worth of methamphetamines.
The two suspects are believed to have secured the drugs from the north and made arrangements to send the drugs to Indonesia by sea.
The suspects were paid handsomely, RM140,000 per shipment and are believed to have successfully sent one shipment before they were caught.
The two were caught with RM3.3 million worth of drugs when police caught up to them at a motel in Sekinchan, Sabak Bernam last week.
Federal Narcotic Crime Investigation Department director Datuk Seri Khaw Kok Chin said police gathered intelligence and monitored the syndicate for three months before arresting the couple at the motel at Sekinchan on Nov 21.
"The 31-year-old man and 28-year-old woman were found together in a room there and we also seized 83.15g of methamphetamines in the same room.
"The male suspect then led police to a Honda car parked at a house at Sungai Air Tawar," he told reporters at the Selangor police headquarters on Monday.
He said police checked the car boot and found 91 packets of herbal tea containing 94.64kg of methamphetamines worth RM3.3 million.
"Our checks revealed the two suspects are lovers.
"Further checks revealed the male suspect is married with three children, while the female suspect is unmarried and unemployed," he said, adding that further checks revealed the male suspect had prior criminal and drug records.
Khaw said both the suspects tested positive for methamphetamines. The duo was remanded for six days.
"We believe the suspects received their supply from up north and shipped the drugs to a neighbouring country by sea.
"The male suspects worked as a transporter, while the woman worked as a storekeeper for the syndicate," he said, adding that they would be working with Indonesian police to identify the syndicate network there.
Khaw said he would meet with his Indonesian counterparts on Nov 27 during a working visit there.
"The main purpose of the visit is to enhance our information sharing on drug smuggling activities."
