KUALA TERENGGANU: Police have detained 12 students from a public higher learning institution for allegedly being involved in a group assault using blunt objects at a residential college last Sunday.
District deputy police chief Superintendent Wan Mohd Zaki Wan Ismail said the male suspects, aged between 20 and 22, were arrested at the institution yesterday evening.
He said the arrests followed a police report lodged by the victim's father yesterday, alleging that his 20-year-old son was assaulted by several students in turns at the residential college between 1am and 5am on Sunday.
"The victim sent several photographs showing injuries to various parts of his body to his father, who was in Melaka, at 10.50pm on Sunday.
"The victim's father arrived in Kuala Terengganu the day before yesterday and brought his son to Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital (HSNZ) for a medical examination, after which he was admitted for further treatment," he said in a statement today.
Zaki added that an examination revealed the victim suffered bruises and internal injuries due to being struck with blunt objects on his left and right arms, right waist, chest, abdomen, and right leg.
He said police also seized weapons believed to have been used in the incident.
"All the suspects were brought to court this morning to obtain a remand order, and they have been remanded for four days starting today.
"The case is being investigated under Section 148 of the Penal Code for possessing deadly weapons during a riot."
