3 months jail for man who threatened family on Christmas Day

BALIK PULAU: An unemployed man was sentenced to three months in jail by the magistrate's court today for criminally intimidating his brother on Christmas Day.

Magistrate Chia Huey Ting handed down the sentence on 29-year-old Muhammad Mahathir Zala-udin after he pleaded guilty to the charge.

Mahathir admitted to threatening his brother by saying he would stab their father with a knife and smash his 25-day-old niece to the floor, intending to cause alarm at their home in Kampung Masjid Teluk Kumbar at 4.10pm on Dec 25.

The charge, under Section 506 of the Penal Code, carries a maximum penalty of two years in prison, a fine, or both.

During mitigation, Mahathir, represented by the National Legal Aid Foundation (YBGK), pleaded for a minimal sentence, expressing remorse for his actions.

Deputy Public Prosecutor R. Lushani urged the court to impose a suitable sentence to serve as a deterrent.
