KUALA LUMPUR: Police are re-examining the case of a 78-year-old snatch theft victim who passed away today following the incident in October.
Brickfields district police chief Ku Mashariman Ku Mahmood said this as the trial for the suspect, who was charged under Section 394 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery, was set to begin next month.
"The trial (for the charge under Section 394) has been scheduled to begin on Jan 10, 2025. We are currently reviewing the cause of death (COD) of the victim to re-examine the case," he said when contacted.
The incident, which occurred on Oct 7, involved the victim, Lim Foong Mei, who was walking to a neighbourhood shop along Jalan Limau Manis at 6.30am when a motorcyclist snatched her handbag.
The robbery caused Lim to fall heavily onto the road, where she remained motionless until passersby came to her aid.
Bangsar Park Residents' Association president, Datuk Nitesh Malani, said Lim sustained severe head injuries and was rushed to Universiti Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) for treatment.
She was placed in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) before being transferred to a care home in Bangsar after her condition stabilised.
Nitesh confirmed that Lim, who had been living alone at the time of the incident, passed away today.
Following the incident, police arrested the suspect within 48 hours of the report being lodged.
