AYER KEROH: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has arrested a managing director in connection with its investigation into bribes for "Datuk Seri" titles.
According to a source, the 62-year-old suspect was detained yesterday evening at the Melaka MACC office.
His arrest follows that of a woman linked to the same case.
The corrupt practices, allegedly involving a syndicate, are believed to have occurred three years ago.
The source said the investigation centres on the managing director's role in soliciting and accepting bribes totalling RM375,000 to assist an individual in obtaining a "Datuk Seri" title from a state.
Earlier today, the Melaka High Court granted the MACC a six-day remand order for the suspect.
The case is being investigated under Section 16(a) of the MACC Act for soliciting and accepting bribes.
The offence carries a minimum fine of five times the bribe amount or RM10,000, whichever is higher, and a maximum jail term of 20 years.
When contacted, Melaka MACC director Adi Supian Shafie confirmed the arrest.
