KUALA LUMPUR: Staff members of the Wangsa Maju Computerised Vehicle Inspection Centre (Puspakom) allegedly involved in approving unsafe vehicles have come forward to provide their statements yesterday.
Road Transport Department (RTD) senior enforcement director Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan said investigations were being finalised for further action.
"The Puspakom staff members involved have attended an interview at RTD Putrajaya. RTD is currently updating and preparing the investigation papers related to the case," he said.
He added that the case would be referred to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) if any misconduct or abuse of power was discovered.
Previously, the media reported that RTD had conducted an unannounced nationwide operation, codenamed Op Mengejut Puspakom, starting at 9.30am.
The operation involved 350 officers and personnel to ensure that all vehicles inspected at Puspakom centres complied with established standards.
Kifli was reported saying that within just two hours, RTD inspected 115 lorries, issued 69 summons notices, and took action against 29 vehicles.
Seven vehicles – five cars and two lorries – were seized.
RTD also identified several violations by lorry drivers, including the use of unsafe retreaded tyres in poor condition, which could potentially burst at any time.
