SHAH ALAM: The decomposed body found at a river in Banting, Selangor on Saturday is confirmed to be that of a 15-year-old girl who went missing from Batu 11, Cheras on Dec 19.
This was determined after DNA tests were run on her remains.
Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said they have already informed the victims's family of the DNA analysis results this afternoon.
"The Chemistry Department conducted the analysis, which confirmed that the body found was that of the teenager.
"The body will be handed over to family members this evening," he said in a statement.
The victim failed to return home after attending a lion dance practice at a basketball court in Batu 11, Cheras on Dec 19.
However, when she failed to return by 10.30pm, her family grew concerned. They lodged a report at 2.15am the following day.
They also posted an appeal on social media for her whereabouts.
Police had initially classified it as a missing persons case.
Police had questioned her 16-year-old boyfriend, who had also lodged a report on her disappearance.
Following the questioning, police found a decomposed body in Sungai Changgang in Banting on Dec 28. The body was taken to the Banting Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
The victim's family members were also called in to provide DNA samples to aid the identification process.
Police later arrested the victim's boyfriend, his 20-year-old brother and 51-year-old father.
The case has been reclassified as murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code.
They have been remanded until Sunday.
Asked on the motive for the murder, Hussein said it, along with other aspects of the case, are currently under investigation.
