PENAMPANG: An eight-year-old schoolboy here suffered a head wound requiring eight stitches after he was allegedly struck by a chair thrown by his teacher.
The boy’s 34-year-old mother, who wished only to be known as ‘Wawa’, said she was shocked when she saw the deep, wide gash on her son’s head following the incident at a classroom here at around 9am yesterday.
“I was told that the teacher who was conducting the Primary Two class was scolding another pupil. (He threw a) wooden chair (at the pupil), but it ended up striking my son instead,” said Wawa, who was disappointed over the incident.
Wawa’s husband, who is also a teacher at the school, learned of the incident and rushed their son to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital 1 for treatment.
Wawa, who works in a media organisation, said she lodged a police report at Kinarut police station in Papar so that action will be taken against the teacher.
Meanwhile, state education director, Datuk Maimunah Suhaibul, said the case is now under police investigation, following the report made by the parents.
“I was informed that the school headmaster has been cooperating with the police, and that the teacher involved will be called in to provide his statement.
“We in the education sector have been reminding teachers that they are not allowed to throw objects, even just a piece of chalk, at pupils and students.
“But we will let the police do their work and see what further (action will be taken) from here,” she said when contacted.
