Firemen conduct daring rescue of lorry which crashed on Penang cliff edge

GEORGE TOWN: A 54-year-old man had to endure hours of pain when he was stuck inside his lorry after it crashed along Jalan Paya Terubong, here today.

The incident happened about 9.20am when the driver, Lim Cheng Lee, was driving from Relau towards Air Itam.

He noticed that an electrical pole on the left was about to topple onto the road and swerved to evade it.

However, he lost control of his lorry and the vehicle crashed on the right side of the road, bringing traffic to a standstill.

Passersby alerted the authorities, and a Paya Terubong Fire and Rescue Department unit, headed by Operation Commander Abdul Shukur Ilhami Musa soon arrived at the scene.

It took them almost two hours to remove the victim from the wreckage.

"The lorry was on the verge of falling off the cliff, it was very unstable there. We had to be extra careful when removing the victim," he told reporters at the scene today.

Lim was successfully rescued and was rushed to the Penang Hospital. He suffered serious bodily injuries.
