Cops question 71-year-old woman who ploughed car into Penang food stalls

GEORGE TOWN: The driver of the car that ploughed into several hawker stalls and injured at least five people in Lorong Baru, near Jalan Macalister yesterday evening has had her statement recorded last night.

Northeast district police chief Assistant Commissioner Anuar Omar in confirming this, said that the 70-year-old woman came to the police station several hours after the incident and police have recorded her statement.

He said so far, no arrest has been made pertaining to the case.

Anuar said based on the woman's explanation, she was trying to reverse her car slowly but had accidentally stepped on the throttle instead of the brake when trying to control the vehicle.

"Minutes before the incident, her car, coming out of Lorong Baru, crashed into a van at Jalan Macalister. So, while she was reversing her car, she had accidentally stepped on the throttle." he said.

It was reported that in the 6.30pm incident, the driver of the Hyundai i10 had crashed into several roadside stalls and injured at least five patrons who were in the vicinity.

One of them, Woon Kwee Fong, 59, sustained severe injuries and was rushed to Penang Hospital while the rest of the victims escaped with minor injuries.

Kwee Fong was reportedly still placed at the red zone ward for observation.

The case, Anuar added, is being investigated under Section 43 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving.
