ARAU: Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) today launched a donation drive to help the 250 families in Tawau, Sabah who were made homeless following a fire tragedy recently.
Its vice-chancellor Datuk Prof Dr Zul Azhar Zahid Jamal said the initiative was meant to ease the victims burden.
He said two UniMAP students who are pursuing studies in Microelectronic programme and the Human Capital and Technocommunication programme are among the 1,000 victims who lost their homes.
"We have formed a task force to manage aid for the students concerned, including from the UniMAP Disaster Fund and tithe.
“The fund that we launched today wil be opened to all people in Perlis who wish to help the victims," he said after launching the fund at UniMAP Health Centre at Pauh Putra here.
Dr Zul Azhar said the donation to be mobilised all over Perlis including the UniMAP one-stop centre for the public at KWSP Building in Kangar.
In the disaster on Saturday, some 1,000 people were made homeless when 250 unit of squatter homes in Kampung Hidayat Batu 4 were destroyed in a fire.
