Heavily pregnant woman among illegal immigrants detained in Shah Alam swoop

SHAH ALAM: A heavily pregnant woman was arrested by the Selangor Immigration Department for overstaying in Malaysia and not possessing valid documents in a 1am raid in Section 32 earlier today.

Believed to be eight-months pregnant, the woman was among 48 illegal foreigners detained at several kongsi and workers hostels' in Kampung Bukit Naga here, for flouting immigration laws.

Selangor Immigration Department director Omran Omar said the two-hour raid saw the detention of 32 men, 13 women and three children aged between 3 and 55.

They are from Myanmar, Bangladesh, Nepal and Indonesia.

"They are illegal workers of factories producing steel, bread and plastic materials. Some were also found to be working as food premises helpers as well as cleaners.

"They will be brought to our department to be investigated under Section 6(1)(c) and Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act for no valid documents and overstaying, respectively.

"On humanitarian grounds, we will be placing the pregnant woman at our temporary detention depot until she gives birth. She will be deported to her country of origin after," said Omran after the operation, which was conducted jointly with the National Registration Department.
