Man tested positive for rabies, under further observation: Health Ministry

GEORGE TOWN: The fifth individual tested positive for rabies in Sarawak has now been place in a separate ward at the Sarawak General Hospital for further observation.

Health Ministry Disease Control Division director Dr Chong Chee Keong said that the 52-year-old man from Kampung Remun is not in critical condition and he has been placed at a separate ward for medical practitioners to closely monitor his progress.

“The disease is deadly; we cannot be complacent. We have to monitor him from time to time,” he said, adding that the incubation period is between three weeks to three months.

Chong was speaking to reporters after launching the 5th Smoke-Free Cities Regional Workshop and the Summit of Smoke-Free Leaders at Hotel Royale Chulan here today.

On Tuesday, the man tested positive the virus. Health Ministry director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah has said that the man was bitten by a dog in May and he was admitted on July 11 with weak limbs, numbness and backache.
