KUANTAN: The Teruntum Complex, which was closed on Sunday following a water tank rupture which demolished part of the shopping mall’s wall, causing concrete slabs to rain down on cars, motorcycles and pedestrians below, will reopen for business today.
Pahang Fire and Rescue Department director Datuk Abdul Wahab Mat Yassin said the approval to reopen was given subject to certain conditions being met to ensure public safety.
“We have conducted an inspection with the cooperation of the Public Works Department (PWD).
“We hope the building’s management will follow the guidelines for the sake of those doing business here," he told reporters here yesterday.
Meanwhile, Teruntum Complex Building Management manager Mohd Zaid Harun said they began cleaning up the rubble by the side of the complex yesterday afternoon.
"We have been directed to (keep) all entrances at the back of the building closed, (but) premises in the front, including the banks, can operate tomorrow.
"Only the main entrance will be opened,” he added.
Mohd Zaid said there are 60 business lots in the commercial complex which opened in January 1980.
Meanwhile, Pahang PWD director Datuk Abdul Jalil Mohamed said the Pahang State Development Corporation (PKNP) will demolish the entire back wall of the complex and appoint a contractor to repair the tank, which has a capacity of 36,000 gallons.
"The reconstruction work and (portion) of the wall to be demolished will depend on the result of the investigation being carried out by PKNP," he added. -- BERNAMA
