Traffic congestion in Klang Valley down by 22pct: Zahid

KUALA LANGAT: Traffic congestion in the Klang Valley has been reduced by 22 per cent since the launch of the Mass Rapid Transit Sungai Buloh-Kajang Line on July 17 this year.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said this was stated in a Cabinet meeting report, which he received yesterday.

“The use of cars in traffic congested areas has gone down by 22 per cent. This means more people are using the MRT where the first day of operations itself saw a ridership of 100,000. Now, it has risen to 200,000 commuters.

“People now leave their cars at parking spaces or their homes and hop on the MRT because of the lower costs. There are also other public transport services such as RapidKL (to further enhance connectivity) and this reflects the government’s commitment in reducing the cost of living,” he said.

Zahid, who is also Umno vice-president, said this in his speech during the opening of the Kuala Langat Umno division meeting at the Amverton Golf Club, here, today.

The MRT Sungai Buloh-Kajang Line was launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

The line, spanning 51km, has 31 stations where 24 are elevated and 7 running underground.

During the launch, Najib announced a 50 per cent discount for rides on the MRT, LRT and Monorail until Merdeka Day.
