KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has expressed his condolences over the early morning blaze that razed a tahfiz school, here.
In a tweet this morning, he said he was deeply saddened by the news that Darul Quran Ittifaqiyah Tahfiz Centre went up in flames, claiming more than 20 lives.
"Innalillah. I am very sad to read that Darul Quran Ittifaqiyah Tahfiz Centre was destroyed by fire and killed more than 20 lives.
"May their souls be blessed by Allah SWT. Al-Fatihah," he said on his Twitter handle, @NajibRazak. The Prime Minister is currently on a three-day visit to the US.
A spokesman from the City Fire and Rescue Department when contacted said they received a call on the incident in Datuk Keramat at 5.41am.
The Tahfiz center was three-stories high and the fire occurred in one of the bedrooms on the third floor.
Authorities have yet to confirm the total number of victims involved.
