MACC building rapport through grassroot approach

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah graft-busters are touring the state’s West Coast and Interior divisions as part of their Kembara Jelajah Anti Rasuah (Kejar) 2017 programme to build up rapport with the people.

Some 100 officers and staff, including Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) director Datuk Sazali Salbi, kicked-off their one day tour at 7.30am, here, today from the Sabah Federal Government Administration Complex.

They were joined by 45 Sabah Big Bikers Association (SBBA) members for the programme which is aimed at raising awareness and spreading anti-graft message to the local community.

During the programme tour, the group will stop at five districts namely Papar in the West Coast Division as well as Membakut, Beaufort, Sipitang, and Sindumin in the interior division.

The graft-busters will spend about two hours at each stop to meet the people and to explain their roles in assisting MACC.

Earlier after flagging off the event, Sazali told reporters that based on the number of reports that they had received, it shows the people are now willing to come forward to provide information to the commission.

“We have received quality information and we need more of them to come forward to furnish us (quality information). So far, that they are willing to become witnesses.

“However, sometimes the type of information that we receive is not related to MACC role but other function and offences. Therefore, we need to educate the people of the sort of information we need.

“If the information is not within our jurisdiction, we will refer it to other relevant agencies,” he said.

Sazali said the Kejar 2017 programme is aimed at changing the mind-set of the people, who could not care less about corruption.

Instead he hopes, it would lead towards supporting MACC’s efforts in combating graft in the country.
