KOTA BARU: Regent of Kelantan Dr Tengku Muhammad Faiz Petra was appointed as Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK)'s chancellor today.
Tengku Muhammad Faiz replaces Sultan Muhammad V, who is now the 15th Yang Di-Pertuan Agong.
A grand ceremony to appoint Tengku Muhammad Faiz as the university's chancellor, held at the UMK campus in Pengkalan Chepa today, was attended by around 500 people.
Among those present were Education Minister Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh, Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Yakob, UMK Vice-Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Mortaza Mohamed and state secretary Datuk Mohd Faudzi Che Mamat.
Earlier, Tengku Muhammad Faiz was escorted into the hall in a full traditional welcoming ceremony.
The installation of Tengku Muhammad Faiz as UMK's new chancellor was announced by Idris.
"On behalf of the Education Ministry as well as the government, l would like to congratulate the Regent of Kelantan for becoming UMK's chancellor," he said.
Tengku Muhammad Faiz who was officially appointed on Feb 16, will be the UMK's chancellor for five years.
