PENDANG: The Kedah state government is considering seeking aid from the federal government’s Disaster Trust Fund to help farmers affected by the flash floods here recently.
Chairman of Women, Agriculture and Agro-Based Development, Entrepreneurial Development, Social Welfare Committee Datuk Suraya Yaacob said the application will be submitted to the Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-Based Industries once the floods have subsided and a detailed assessment of the damage is obtained.
“I urge farmers to report their losses to the Muda Agricultural Development Authority (Mada) and the Area Farmers before an investigation is carried out.
“After the report is submitted, officials from the Agriculture Department and Mada will investigate and assess the losses,” she said after presenting incentives to the farmers in Pendang yesterday.
It is estimated that 765 hectares of padi land in the Mada area were damaged by flood waters. Of this figure, 671 hectares are in Pendang district, 94 hectares are in Kubang Pasu, while 212 hectares are in areas outside Mada, with losses amounting to more than RM4.6 million. — BERNAMA
