(Update) 20 injured as express bus crashes, overturns along North-South Expressway

KUALA LUMPUR: Twenty people were injured - six of them severely wounded - when the express bus they were in crashed into a divider and plunged into a ditch at Km434.9 of the North-South Expressway this morning.

The bus with two drivers and 24 passengers was travelling from Sungai Petani to Kuala Lumpur in the 5am crash.

Hulu Selangor police chief Superintendent Lim Bak Phai said all victims were treated at the Sungai Buloh Hospital.

“Six were treated at the red zone, yellow zone (eight) and green zone (six) while another six passengers escaped unhurt.

Lim said the bus, from Kedah, had stopped by Kuantan en route to Kuala Lumpur. The accident, he said, occurred when the driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed it into a road divider.

“The vehicle then veered into the opposite direction and overturned into a ditch,” he said.

Lim said police are still investigating the cause of the mishap as the drivers are being treated at the critical zone. The passengers were also unaware of the cause as they were asleep at the time.

The case is being investigated under Section 43(1) Road Transport Act 1987 for careless and inconsiderate driving.

Meanwhile, Selangor Fire and Rescue Department assistant director (operations) Mohd Sani Harul said four engines from the Kuala Kubu Baru and Rawang stations were deployed for the rescue operation.
