GEORGE TOWN: With the flood situation worsening in the state, the Penang government has reached out to the armed forces for help.
Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said he contacted Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi at 3.30am today seeking assistance.
“We have sought the assistance of the armed forces, which the Deputy Prime Minister has agreed to send.
“The flooding has worsened. The water level is still rising – 10 to 12 feet above the roof of houses – and the wind is still very strong.
“(Even) electricity supply at flood relief centres have been cut off,” he said.
Lim called for Penangites to stay calm as they face trying times.
“Take care of your safety as well as that of your family,” he added.
Meanwhile, the floods have forced Rapid Penang to temporarily cease its stage bus operations.
Flood waters were reported to have inundated major roads and disrupted electricity supply to key areas.
"In the interest of public safety, we have no option but to temporarily cease the operations of our stage buses until the heavy rain (stops) and flood waters subside," a Rapid Penang spokesman said.
Commuters have been advised to refer to the Rapid Penang Facebook at *rapidpgfans* for updates.
